This quote has been bothered me for some time, “What you do in your bedroom is your business.” It makes it seem like being gay, lesbian or bisexual is something that you only do in your bedroom. I don’t go to work in my bedroom. I don’t go shopping in my bedroom. I don’t adopt children in my bedroom. I don’t buy a house in my bedroom. I don’t go to the hospital in my bedroom. I don’t walk on the sidewalk with my partner in my bedroom. So tell me, why I am denied these things, because of the something I do, only in my bedroom?
Obviously those who are in power and deny me these simple liberties know that a sexual orientation reaches into every aspect of life. My sexual orientation is a part of me and is with me every day all day. I have in these ten years come to the conclusion that attempting to hide some part about you is pointless. You are beginning these connections and relationship on a lie. That is not a productive way of conducting one’s self. And from that moment on, you have to make sure that you cover that lie for the days, weeks, months or even years that you are in that relationship. I can understand someone wanting to keep their life in some privacy but just do not lie. It only hurts your fellow LGB brothers and sisters and pushes them back in the fight.
My Trans friends are probably feeling that I have left them out but they are just getting their own section. Their fight is unique in the fact it is fought on even more fronts. They are fighting family, society, religion and the LGB community. Trans people have been there every step of the way fighting and marching right along with their LGB brothers and sisters for simple rights; respect and acceptance. They are often left out of legislation, out of the conversation, out of the light, when it comes to protection under the law.
Many conservatives can grasp their head around being cis-LGB because they are still prescribing to the birth gender binary. In their eyes, God has crated diversity within these people. They on the other hand view transgender people wrong because this group is supposedly saying that God fucked up. He put this person into the wrong body and now they are trying to play God in “fixing it”. I, however have to say that God, did not make a mistake on these people. Yes they wear born with these bodies that do not seem to match up with the mind, but they are born to teach the world to acceptance. They were born to make the world better for those who come after them. They were born to be the pioneers in this social world to show that change is possible even when people think that it is not. God, Yahweh, Allah, Buddha, Mom, Grandma or ever you may call your higher power that you go to for solace and strength loves you with all that they can and wishes you nothing but happiness in the years in time and space that you alive.
When we bring together these groups, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, ally and the multitudes of people who fit amongst the gender and sexual orientation spectrum they have to unite. Unite amongst their individual letter, unite under the spectrum. We have this flag that we have united under made of the three primary colors and first three secondary colors from which all other colors to paint the flags and symbols that represent each of us. I have never called it just a gay pride flag but just the PRIDE flag. Its colors for so many and for so long have meant there is a safe place or area where we can gather and celebrate each other’s company. We can teach and educate our own to then teach the masses about us. We do not live a particular lifestyle or have an agenda other than to live on this planet and make it a bit better than when we were born.
